Formey Gov. Mitt Romney, R-Mass., was clearly delighted to announce his endorsement of Gov. Chris Christie, R-NJ, but after Christie’s statement, reporters wanted to know what Christie thought of Robert Jeffress’ comments about Mormonism after introducing Gov. Rick Perry, R-Texas, at the Values Voters Summit.
“These type of religious matters have nothing to do with the quality of a person’s ability to lead,” said Christie while recalling the “crazies” who criticized him for nominating a Muslim judge in New Jersey.

“I think that any campaign, that associates itself with that type of conduct is beneath the presidency of the United States in my view,” Christie added, referring to Rick Perry.
Romney reminded reporters that Perry thanked Jeffress for “hitting it out of the park” after reminding voters that Perry was a “true follower of Christ.”
“I don’t think that divisiveness based upon religion has a place in this country,” said Romney, who called for Perry to repudiate those remarks.
The Associated Press just reported that Perry, through a spokesman, refused Romney’s request.
