Facebook tells employees they can work from home until 2021 because of the coronavirus

Facebook employees may not see their colleagues in person until 2021.

The social media company’s physical offices will be reopening on July 6 in California, but a Facebook spokesperson said on Friday that employees have the option to work from home for the rest of the year because of the coronavirus outbreak, according to a report from the Information.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has urged government officials not to reopen the economy too quickly out of fear of “fallout” from new coronavirus cases that could emerge when business operations return to normal. He predicted that the pandemic would “last longer than people are anticipating.” He also noted that his company would not return to hosting meetings of 50 or more people until June 2021.

Facebook’s offices are located in Menlo Park, California. The state has had the fifth-largest outbreak in the nation with more than 62,000 confirmed cases of the COVID-19 virus and 2,546 related deaths. Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom has been hesitant to reopen any part of the state and recently ordered beaches to close in Orange County after local officials voted to reopen them.
