The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for two bombings in Baghdad on Wednesday.

The first was a car bomb attack in a Shiite area of Baghdad that killed at least 64 people and left nearly 90 injured.

According to Iraqi police, a bomb exploded after it was placed in a parked car.

One witness said the bomb was in a pickup truck loaded with fruits and vegetables that was parked by a man who quickly disappeared among the crowded outdoor market area. The deadly attack took place in Sadr City, a Shiite area north of the Iraqi capital.

The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack in an unverified statement on social media, saying it was targeting Shiite military members gathering in the area.

Shortly after, the group took credit for another deadly bombing in which 15 killed were killed and 30 more injured in the Shiite district of Kadhimiyah. Details on that attack have not yet been released.

The terror group also carried out back-to-back market bombings in the same area in February, killing at least 73 people.

The Islamic State, which is made up of Sunni extremists, sees Shiites as apostates.
