The Towson football team has reached new heights.
Street & Smith’s College Football Magazine ranked the Tigers No. 17 in the nation for all NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) programs.

“This is the first time we’ve ever been ranked in the preseason in 1-AA,” Towson coach Gordy Combs said. “It’s a testament to the direction the administration have given us, and what the players have accomplished over the last few years. Our coaches deserve a lot of credit.”
Towson went 7-4 and maintained a national ranking for several weeks last season.
The Tigers will open their 16th season under Combs on Aug. 30 against Central Connecticut State. It will be Towson’s first year in the recently formed Colonial Athletic Conference after spending three years in the Atlantic 10.
Towson is one of five CAAteams ranked by Street & Smith’s, joining New Hampshire (third), Delaware (seventh), Massachusetts (12th) and James Madison (19th).
The Tigers were picked to finish second in the CAA’s Southern Division behind Delaware.
Towson is led by junior quarterback Sean Schaefer, who has thrown for 5,805 yards collectively the past two seasons, ranking him sixth place on the school?s all-time passing list.
UMBC NAMES THOMAS TO STAFF: Aki Thomas was named as an assistant to coach Randy Monroe on the UMBC men’s basketball coaching staff, joining Frankie Allen and Nate Stewart.
The former University of Colorado standout was a Howard University assistant last season, specializing in working with the frontcourt.
UMBC went 12-19 overall with a 7-9 record in the America East Conference last year.
NAVY MEN’S SOCCER LANDS NINE: Navy men’s soccer coach Rich Miranda announced a nine-player recruiting class Tuesday, including two in-state players-defender Josh Pike of Gaithersburg and midfielder Jason Kremers of Frederick.
The rest of the class for Navy, which went 5-9-2 last fall, includes midfielder Raphael Asenime, goalkeeper Will Craven, defender Alex Fozkett, midfielder Gaylan Greenwalt, defender Andy Hampson, defender Sam Lemply and forward Mike Porcelli.
