Kavanaugh got ‘big hug’ from kids after chaotic confirmation hearing

Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh told senators on Wednesday that he got hugs and congratulations from his two daughters Tuesday night after the first day of his Senate confirmation hearing, which was so combative that his kids left the hearing room with their mother.

“They gave me a big hug and said, ‘Good job, daddy,’ and Margaret before she went to bed made a special trip down and … gave me a special hug,” Kavanaugh said after Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., asked what he told his children about the first day.

“I just wish if we could have a hearing where the nominee’s kids could show up,” Graham said. “Is that asking too much?”

A source close to the nominee said the first day of the hearing was “very unpleasant” for his daughters Margaret and Ashley. Kavanaugh’s family left the hearing early after protesters shouted throughout the event and interrupted mostly Republicans as they tried to advance the nominee.

“So what kind of country have we become?” Graham asked.
