The late President George H.W. Bush’s casket, along with friends and family, left Washington Wednesday en route to Texas after three days of memorial services in Washington.
The 41st president will be buried at his presidential library in College Station, Texas, on Thursday, alongside his wife Barbara, who died earlier this year, and their daughter Robin, who died of leukemia when she was 3.
Bush lied in state at the Capitol from Monday through Wednesday morning. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Speaker Paul Ryan, Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, and Vice President Mike Pence were among the thousands to visit the late president as he lay in state at the U.S. Capitol Rotunda.
Wednesday morning, his casket was transported to the Washington National Cathedral for funeral services.
The service was attended by President Trump, who sat in the first row alongside former Presidents Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, and Jimmy Carter, plus 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. Numerous foreign dignitaries including German Chancellor Angela Merkel, former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, and Prince Charles of the United Kingdom.
Mulroney, former Republican Sen. Alan Simpson of Wyoming, and historian Jon Meacham eulogized the late president, as did former President George W. Bush, who teared up while speaking about his late father inside the cathedral.
