Huckabee: My religion gets scrutinized more than Romney’s

Yeas & Nays has gotten a sneak peak at the January issue of GQ (on newsstands Dec. 24) and, in it, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee says that he — and not Mitt Romney — has come under the greatest scrutiny for his religious views.

“No candidate gets quizzed to the depth that I do about faith,” Huckabee told Ross Douthat.

That statement will come as a surprise to many who believe that Romney’s presidential campaign has consistently and repeatedly been dogged by questions about his Mormon faith.

But Huckabee told the magazine that Romney “hasn’t gotten nearly as much for his Mormonismas I have for being a Baptist. I mean, I’ve never heard the kind of interviews with him that I got from Bill O’Reilly or Wolf Blitzer. No one’s just kept pressing and pressing and going into the details of his doctrine. Not that I’ve heard. ”

Douthat asked Huckabee if perhaps his religion was relevant because it also makes up part of his professional experience his job (Huckabee previously served as pastor of several Southern Baptist churches).

“Okay, but are you quizzing Rudy Giuliani about being a lawyer?” asked Huckabee. “I haven’t been a pastor in sixteen years. I mean, if you want to go back sixteen years and ask Fred Thompson, ‘What were you doing?'”
