During a radio interview Wednesday, former Oriole first baseman David Segui told WNST?s Bob Haynie that former team executive Jim Beattie knew he took human growth hormones for medicinal purposes.
Beattie, who is no longer with the Orioles, could not be reached for comment Wednesday afternoon.

Current general manager Mike Flanagan quibbled with a report by the Sun that the Orioles knew Segui was on human growth hormones. Flanagan maintained he was questioned by reporters recently on whether Orioles knew about a medical condition that required Segui to take HGH, which he says the club did not.
“I would reiterate that Segui told Jim Beattie in September of ?04, in Segui?s last year, thathe was, and Jim relayed this to me, that David Segui was going to Florida to see a doctor to get HGH and with that, he left the club,” Flanagan said.
ESPN.com, on Wednesday, wrote “Beattie told ESPN that Segui relayed to him only late in the 2004 season that he had been taking HGH. However, Beattie said he told others in the Baltimore front office that Segui asked him if he could see his doctor in Florida, who prescribed HGH, before heading home after Segui was placed on the DL. It was clear Segui wouldn?t play again in 2004, the final year of a four-year contract with the Orioles, and given Segui?s inactive status, no action was taken by the team.”
Segui, who played for the Orioles from 2001 to 2004, said Beattie did nothing wrong.
“By no means am I pointing the finger at anybody that works in the front office of the Baltimore Orioles. I want to make that really clear,” Segui said.
Segui said one of his mistakes was that he did not file an application with Major League Baseball to claim his use of HGH. Segui said he did not hide the fact that he was taking HGH from teammates.
“There were some guys on the team that knew because … when I traveled, I kept it on ice,” Segui said.
Segui recently came out and said that he was one of the players mentioned by former Oriole Jason Grimsley, who played for the Birds in 2004 and 2005, in a sworn affidavit. Grimsley was recently caught obtaining human growth hormones and named both former and current players who were taking various drugs.
Segui said he read the affidavit and recognized the conversation between he and Grimsley.
“I told him as a friend, ?Look, if that?s what you want to do, do it the right way and go to the doctor and have your (blood) level checked,? ” Segui said.
Segui said he did not tell Grimsley to take or not take HGH, and bears no moral responsibility for Grimsley?s decisions.
