Who: Federal Highway Administration
What: According to the Alaska Journal of Commerce, the agency gave approval to proceed with the $1.075 billion Knik Arm Bridge in Alaska. About $54 million has already been spent on the project, much of it for consulting services, and there’s about $65 million remaining from the original federal and state grants to pay for continuing work. Private funding sources have not yet been identified.
Why it’s an outrage: The crossing is expected to reduce the cost of trucking freight from South-central Alaska to the North Slope by a mere $326 million — over 10 years. In other words, taxpayers are paying quite a bit to reduce costs for private interests.
