Construction is under way to add more than 1,400 parking spots at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport to keep pace with the airport’s swelling number of passengers.
The spots, which are expected to be available in 2010, will represent a 27 percent increase in available garage parking, according to the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, which manages Reagan National and Washington Dulles International airports. The airport has 5,204 public garage spots, with prices ranging from $4 an hour to $17 a day.
The $54 million project will yield a new, fifth level on Garages A, B and C, which hold hourly and daily parking spots. The construction will temporarily close a 162-space section on the roof of Daily Garage C, authorities said.
MWAA is scheduled to open a temporary, 700-spot lot near the Economy Lot this summer, with free shuttle service to the terminals.
“Our passenger numbers have reached record levels, so increasing the available parking at the airport will contribute to a smoother travel experience for everyone,” MWAA President and Chief Executive Jim Bennett said.
Reagan National has seen three record-breaking years in the number of passengers. The airport served 18.7 million people in 2007, breaking its 2006 record by more than 100,000 passengers. MWAA will post updates at www.mwaa.com/reagan during the parking construction. The authority is advising the public to check parking availability online before driving to the airport.
