Chris Matthews and Carly Fiorina Spar Over Hillary ‘Lies’

Coming off a well-received performance in Thursday’s 5 p.m. debate, Carly Fiorina appeared on MSNBC’s Hardball, where host Chris Matthews grilled the Republican candidate over her onstage claim that Hillary Clinton lied. “Hillary Clinton lies about Benghazi, she lies about e- mails,” Fiorina said in her closing statement at Cleveland’s Quicken Loans arena.

“You called Hillary Clinton a liar tonight on a number of occasions,” Matthews said. “Do you want to explain why you would use such an almost end-of-conversation term for your possible opponent next year?”

“Because it’s true,” Fiorina responded. “By any standard, commonsense measure, Hillary Clinton has lied about Benghazi and about her emails and about her server.”

“You really think that’s the way to engage in a debate, to call your opponent a liar?” Matthews pressed. “I’m astounded by that judgment of yours.”

“First of all, I was very specific about the subjects about which I think she has lied. I didn’t say she lied about everything. I was very specific, very fact-based, actually,” Fiorina shot back. “You are the one who has made a generalized comment about her, not me.”

The conversation ramped up from there. Watch the video below:

“I see why you stood out tonight,” Matthews finally conceded.
