Wincing on Background

Dan Balz can’t find a single Republican to knock the vice president on record, but he still writes a story about how Cheney’s current role is making Republicans “wince.” Rather, it’s “Republican political strategists” who are wincing on background, keenly aware that the people who pay them are quite enjoying watching Cheney batter the administration. Of course the Hill already wrote this story two months ago, and they were able to get actual Republicans on the record telling the VP to take a hike. But that was before the administration announced that it was going to revive military commissions, before it reversed a decision to release photos of alleged detainee abuse, before it revealed its plans for indefinite detention without trial. You know what would be interesting is if Balz went and asked the Republicans reps who were happy to go on record two month ago whether they still think Cheney is being unhelpful. Instead DNC press secretary Hari Sevugan is the only one Balz can get to trash the former veep on the record. And why would Republicans snipe at the administration’s most potent and effective critic?
