Text leads to kidnapping charges

A D.C. couple was charged with kidnapping a woman and her 22-month-old child, Takoma Park police said.

Ashley N. Brown, 20, and Lamont D. Shepard, 21, were arrested after police said they received a text message from the victim saying that she and her child had been abducted and were in a car heading to an IHOP restaurant. Police set up surveillance in the 7400 block of New Hampshire Avenue and watched as the car pulled into the parking lot.

Police said Brown believed the woman owed her money and had Shepard hold the victim inside the car using the child safety lock until the she paid up.

Md. calls P.G. youth facility overcrowded

The Cheltenham Youth Facility where an inmate is charged with raping and stabbing to death a 65-year-old employee is the most overcrowded detention center in Maryland, according to a state juvenile justice report.

The Prince George’s County facility has reduced its average number of youths from 115 to 105, but remains well over its capacity of 85. The report does not address the slaying of a counselor outside the facility in February, but said the overcrowding can contribute to stress and violence.

Fatal stabbing in D.C. condo

D.C. police are investigating the stabbing death of a man in his condominium in Northwest Washington.

Around 6 p.m. Monday, police responded to a call of a man down in the 11-story apartment complex in the 1100 block of 10th Street Northwest. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. He was identified as Delando King, 34. No arrests have been made.

Woman in police video is safe

A woman seen in surveillance video being forced into a vehicle is safe, D.C. police said.

Police issued an alert about the incident on Tuesday, asking the public to help identify the suspect or woman. Police said Wednesday they interviewed the woman and determined that she had not been abducted and was safe.
