Description »  The 33-year-old course is a dated, tree-lined, traditional municipal with pace of play issues on the weekend. Some of the parallel fairways are tight, but the well-maintained greens are large, flat, and slow, making the course playable for high handicappers.

Reason to play »  Attractive layout on a solid piece of property is top municipal course in Prince George’s County, and compares favorably with other Washington area publics of its era, including Algonkian, Herndon, RedGate and Falls Road.

Jewel of the system »  Enterprise is the only full-sized course under the umbrella of the Prince George’s County Department of Parks and Recreation. The others, Henson Creek (Oxon Hill) and Paint Branch (College Park), are 9-hole executive facilities.

Toughest hole »  No. 16, Par 4, 445 Yards

Longest par 4 on the course is a dogleg right with a wide fairway. Approaches must reach the putting surface in the air. A dip in front of the green will stop shots cold. No way to hit a run-up on this demanding hole.

Best hole »  No. 5, Par 4, 438 Yards

Without directional flag, this hole would be a mystery from the tee where there is no clearly-defined fairway. Approach is downhill to a wide green framed by majestic oaks. Warning: This is one of the few severely-sloped greens at Enterprise.

Enterprising venture »  Course was built on land formerly owned by Newton White, first commanding officer of the U.S.S. Enterprise before World War II. His two-story brick mansion, built in 1939, includes a glass-enclosed atrium and a brick patio and fountain, which overlook the first and 10th tees. Mansion can be rented out for receptions.

Designer »  Robert Elder turned a former dairy farm into one of the top municipal courses in the Washington area. Players will recognize his minimalist style at another strong muni, Black Rock (Hagerstown), and at Geneva Farm (Harford County).
