Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert hit Obama administration on military action in Syria

Jon Stewart has officially returned to ‘The Daily Show‘ — and he and fellow comedian Stephen Colbert came out swinging against the Obama administration for plans to take military action in Syria.

After a three-month absence, during which he filmed ‘Rosewater,’ Stewart was hoping for an easy reentry to his show on Tuesday night. But the biggest news story is Syria, so the host tackled that, ridiculing the Obama administration for its so-called ‘red line’ — which seemingly ignores the fact that thousands of Syrians have already been killed by means other than chemical weapons.

“You can’t use chemicals to kill your own people,” Stewart said. “You have to do it organically.”

Pundits and politicians have argued that a lack of action would make America look weak. But Stewart concluded that the ‘red line’ was a “d**k measuring ribbon” and America is behaving like a 7th grader, seeking to attack Syria to make itself look strong.

Colbert also briefly took the Obama administration to task during Tuesday night’s episode of ‘The Colbert Report.’ He chastised the United States for only stepping in once Syrian Prime Minister Bashar Al Assad used chemical weapons, but not before.

“Before, he was just killing them with bullets,” Colbert said. “But if America cared about shooting people, we’d be invading Chicago.”

The two comedians typically present their segments from a liberal slant, but both men took shots at the Obama administration upon their return from summer vacation. But Stewart and Colbert aren’t alone in their distaste for military action in Syria. Nearly 60 percent of Americans are also against it, according to a recent poll.
