By the Numbers: Americans say cut spending, tax the rich

63 percent: Americans who agree that the new super committee charged with finding $1.5 trillion in deficit reduction should increase taxes for businesses and wealthy individuals, according to a new CNN/ORC International Poll released Wednesday. The same poll found that 57 percent want deep cuts in domestic spending, though respondents seem divided when it comes to military spending, with 47 percent agreeing with major military cuts and 53 percent disagreeing. Sixty-four percent said they would disagree with major changes to Social Security and Medicare, and 87 percent disagree with tax increases on middle and lower-income Americans. At the same time, 62 percent said that taxes on the wealthy should be high so the government can use the money for programs to help lower-income Americans.
