Abortion cheerleaders in California are a reminder of how dark the politics of abortion are

Democratic activists are using abortion as a motivator to get voters to support California Gov. Gavin Newsom against the election to recall him from office. While this seems like politics as normal, it is worth a reminder of just how gruesome our political reality is.

Abortion groups including NARAL and Planned Parenthood are hoping to increase voter turnout in California by warning a recall of Newsom would result in an “anti-abortion” governor replacing him. Planned Parenthood has a particular interest in California, given the state handed down 15 felony charges against undercover journalists who exposed the organization sold the body parts of aborted babies.

What these groups are fighting for, and what they are boasting Newsom will protect, is unfettered access to abortion with practically no restrictions. That includes abortion procedures such as the one the courts finally gave Texas permission to ban: dilation and evacuation. During the procedure, a doctor uses forceps to remove the baby’s limbs to extract them from the womb. Planned Parenthood fought to have the courts prevent Texas from enforcing that ban.

Perhaps some become numb to it, but it is worth reiterating just how dark our politics of abortion are. It isn’t just about the gruesome nature of specific abortion procedures, such as dilation and evacuation. Abortion itself is a procedure that ends a human life. This is a scientific reality. Democrats and pro-abortion activists frequently deny or avoid this reality to justify their support for abortion, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t true.

Their passionate and fervent support for abortion is premised on ignoring the biological reality of when life begins and what abortion does. After all, Democrats never really defend abortion on the merits. But that doesn’t make it any less morbid, and we shouldn’t become numb to the fact this is what California Democrats have chosen as part of their frantic strategy to keep Newsom in office.

Even with the Supreme Court’s egregiously flawed abortion jurisprudence, the pro-life movement has made tremendous strides over the years. Even in the unlikely event California recalls Newsom and replaces him with, say, conservative Republican Larry Elder, California will be one of the last states to see that pro-life progress. But this is a reminder of what is at stake.

After the recall election, it should not be shrugged off or accepted as politics as normal — even in the Golden State.
