At the American Spectator Newsmaker breakfast this morning, Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) spoke about the Balanced Budget Amendment and the future of the Tea Party.

“The accomplishments of this movement, of this political phenomenon that are realized and achieved in the 2012 election cycle are going to make what happened in 2010 look like a Sunday picnic.” he said.

When asked about recent polls showing fading public opinion for the Tea Party, he suggested that the “Tea Party” was more of an idea, than a specific brand.

Polls showing a decline in public opinion, he said, “may say something about how people feel about a particular organization, or people who dress up in three-cornered hats or Captain America outfits and run around on Capitol Hill waving enormous flags but it says nothing about our movement.”

Lee added, “At the end of the day the Tea Party movement consists of a  set of principles that reflect changing sentiments of the American people, if you poll on these sentiments you’ll see that its never been stronger.”

At age 40, Lee is the youngest member of the Senate, elected in 2010 with conservative newcomers Rand Paul, Pat Toomey, and Marco Rubio. Lee’s book, “The Freedom Agenda” discusses at length the importance of the Balanced Budget Amendment.
