Aerial footage emerges of Hurricane Dorian damage to Bahamas

Hurricane Dorian has destroyed parts of the Bahamas in recent days as the winds from the natural disaster neared 150 mph.

The hurricane, which has killed five people so far, hit the Abaco Islands first as a Category 5, leaving significant damage. CNN aired footage of the damage from the Abaco Islands on Tuesday afternoon. The video appears to show grave damage throughout the area, with many buildings no longer standing, combined with raised water levels.

The Salvation Army claimed that 13,000 homes were destroyed from the hurricane, according to USA Today.

“We are seeing photos, videos of people up to their waist in water in their homes, and the water is rising,” Capt. Mike Michels with the Salvation Army in Kingston, Jamaica, said. “The government is telling people to cut holes in their ceilings so they can’t be trapped if the water rushes in. It’s crazy.”

“We are in the midst of a historic tragedy,” Prime Minister Hubert Minnis said Monday.

The National Hurricane Center release updated the status of Dorian, saying, “The eyewall of Dorian continues to move away from Grand Bahama Island. However, dangerous winds and life-threatening storm surge will continue over that island through this evening.”
