Kurtz says NBC’s late decision to fire Trump is ‘gratuitous grandstanding’

Fox News Media Analyst Howard Kurtz bashed NBC Monday for waiting too long to fire “The Apprentice” host Donald Trump after he first made his controversial comments against Hispanic immigrants.

“Well, first of all, this is gratuitous grandstanding by NBC, which, if it were so offended by some comments, would have done this a week ago instead of putting out a wimpy statement…” Kurtz said on Fox’s “The Kelly File.”

Fox News host Megyn Kelly pointed out that Trump could not have continued hosting the show anyway given his bid for presidency.

“Of course not, so it’s easy, it’s an easy shot to take to mollify Hispanic viewers, who are understandably upset by Trump’s comments, and to stand behind Univision and the whole beauty pageant thing,” Kurtz said.

Univision, the most-watched Spanish-language channel in the U.S., has decided to part ways with Trump over his comments illegal immigrants from Mexico are rapists and drug dealers. Trump’s Miss USA beauty pageant was to air on Univision, but now it will not.

Kurtz said that one thing the public enjoys about Trump is the fact that he sticks to his comments, instead of than retracting them and apologizing as most politicians would. This strategy works for Trump because he “strikes a chord,” Kurtz said.

“He’s standing by his comments and his comment today was, ‘NBC is weak. They are weak, otherwise they would tell the truth which is as I say it,’ that was his point,” Kelly said.

Kelly said that Ann Coulter has a book out that supports Trump’s stereotypes of Hispanics, but she noted that Coulter is not running for president.

“Nor would she ever be elected with that point of view,” Kurtz said.
