Hillary Clinton wrongly says she was in NYC on 9/11

Hillary Clinton claimed incorrectly during an address Tuesday evening that she was in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001.

“I know what happened not far from here at Pulse nightclub in Orlando,” the Democratic nominee said at a campaign rally in Sanford, Fla., in reference to a mass shooting event in which an Islamic State-inspired 29-year-old, Omar Mateen, shot and killed more than 40 patrons at a gay bar.

“I was in New York City on 9/11 as one of two senators,” Clinton added. “I will defeat ISIS.”

Clinton was in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 11, 2001. Congress was still in session. When transportation became available on Sept. 12, she traveled to New York City to survey the damage with then-Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. Clinton later used her position as as an Empire State senator to secure benefits and aid for victims of the 9/11 attacks.

However, despite her role in helping the city rebuild, Giuliani challenged her last month for asserting she was there when her constituents needed her.

“Don’t tell me if you said that you remember Sept. 11, 2001,” the former mayor and outspoken Donald Trump supporter said at a GOP campaign event last month in Ocala, Fla. “I remember Sept. 11, 2001.”

“Yes, you helped to get benefits for the people who were injured that day,” he added. “But I heard her say she was there that day. I was there that day, I don’t remember seeing Hillary Clinton there. That was like when she said she had to run through gunfire. That turned out to be — what do we call it? — a lie.”

“But don’t tell me that you subscribe to the notion that all of us were [in New York City] on Sept. 11 and we’re lucky to be alive and have lost so many friends. I lost so many friends on Sept. 11. I think about it every day. Don’t tell me you belong to our very, very tight group of ‘never forget.’ Don’t tell me that,” Giuliani said.

The Clinton camp responded immediately to the charge, saying on social media, “In 2001, Hillary worked to support and rebuild New York after 9/11. Trump pocketed emergency funds for himself.”

Giuliani apologized later for suggesting Clinton was missing in action during the Sept. 11 attacks.

“I made a mistake. I’m wrong and I apologize,” Giuliani told The Associated Press.
