Zipcar partners with 100 more colleges and universities this year

Students at 100 more colleges won’t need their own cars to get around this year, as Zipcar continues to expand its reach on campuses.

The car-sharing company that currently operates on more than 475 campuses, announced on Monday that it had signed contracts with over 100 colleges and universities that will start using the service in 2015.

Universities that have already launched the service this fall include Clemson University, Wichita State University, and the University of Tampa.

In the press release, Zipcar promoted its university effort as a more environmentally friendly option than individual car ownership, and pointed out that the service will free up parking space on campuses.

“Zipcar continues to be the leader in providing universities with a convenient, affordable and sustainable transportation option, and our goal is to be operating on over 500 campuses this year,” said Zipcar president Kaye Ceille. “Universities are often like small cities in how they experience parking challenges. With each Zipcar eliminating the need for up to 15 personally owned vehicles, we are able to reduce congestion and CO2 emissions on participating campuses.”

At participating universities, students 18 years and older can apply for a Zipcard through their school that allows them access to cars on campus 24/7. Cars can be rented on an hourly or daily basis and the company takes care of insurance and gas costs (up to 180 miles per day).
