One dead in shooting at NSA gate

One person was killed and at least one other person was injured after two people in a vehicle tried to ram a gate at Fort Meade early Monday morning.

Fort Meade, home to the National Security Agency and U.S. Cyber Command, is a sprawling heavily guarded campus in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, with multiple checkpoints to safeguard against unwanted intrusions.

One person was killed in a firefight that erupted Monday after a car with two people tried to ram a gate at the Fort Meade, Md., military base near a gate to the National Security Agency, according to preliminary reports cited by two U.S. officials.

Two U.S. officials told the Associated Press that a firefight ensued after the car tried to crash the gate, and at least one of the two people in the car died. Both federal officials spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss an ongoing incident on the record.

Photos from the scene showed a van and police SUV damaged, and a white tarp on the ground covering what was possibly a body. The incident occurred around 9 a.m., according to news reports.

“It is an ongoing investigation and the FBI has the lead,” Marci Miller, a spokeswoman with the NSA said, according to the Washington Post.
