It?s time for Orioles fans to break out their orange and black. At 3:05 p.m. today, the Orioles play their home opener against the Detroit Tigers.

Ricky Hohman II, a home-schooled seventh-grader from Catonsville, loves baseball.

“Probably the Orioles [will win today], because they have good sportsmanship,” he said. His favorite player is shortstop Miguel Tejada. “I?ve liked him since I was 10,” Ricky said. “He?s real good.”

Kristin Ringley, a fifth-grader at St. John?s Lane Elementary School in Ellicott City, is attending her first game at Camden Yards. “The Orioles will win because they have the best players,” she said. Cal Ripken is Kristin?s all-time favorite player “because he?s amazing,” she said.

“I?m definitely an Orioles fan,” said Christopher Boer, a sophomore at Carver Center for Arts and Technology. “My dad and I got tickets to [an upcoming] game against the Kansas City Royals.” Christopher?s top Oriole is infielder Chris Gomez, “who wasn?t my favorite at first, but then he started to grow on me,” he said.

Christopher, who attends about three games a year, said wearing orange and black helps the team win. “Whenever [my dad and I] wear the colors, it does seem to help,” he said. “But if we leave a game early, things always start going downhill for the Orioles.”

Meg Lanthier, a second-grader at St. John?s Lane, is happy the season has started but is sad she?s not going to today?s game.

“My parents are going, and I really wish I were, too,” Meg said. “The Orioles are going to win, because they?re a much better team.”

And Keith Kuchera, a student at Howard Community College, said, “The Orioles will definitely win this one, because they have some really good players this year.”
