THE 3-MINUTE INTERVIEW: Julie Heckman

Heckman is the executive director of the American Pyrotechnics Association, based in Bethesda. The group is the main fireworks trade association, including fireworks design companies, manufacturers and local retailers. How are local fireworks sales this year?

Retail fireworks sales started this weekend in the District. I just traveled from North Carolina and stopped in a number of retails establishments in the District and was surprised to see how business is booming. This weekend is by far when people will be purchasing their fireworks for the upcoming long weekend. We’re off to a very good start.

What is special about the fireworks industry?

I love the ability to be able to ignite backyard consumer fireworks because each year they get better and more vibrant, but I still love being part of the community event of watching the local display together. I think that it is a tradition that continues from our childhood.

What advice do you have for the budding fireworks enthusiast?

It’s important to buy from an established retail outlet. Never purchase fireworks from the back of a car and a van. Go to one of these permitted licensed stands and stores. Follow the instructions of use. You should ignite them on a flat level surface. The driveway, the cul-de-sac, or a piece of plywood on your lawn are the ideal places to launch your fireworks.

Where is the best place to see Washington’s fireworks?

D.C. is wonderful in terms of having a great variety of viewing areas. A lot of people want to be right down on the Mall and underneath the great brilliant, vibrant fireworks burning. You can also watch from across the river, and there great places along the Potomac. If you really want appreciate the choreography and see the show as it was designed by the professional company, viewing from Northern Virginia is ideal. When you’re directly underneath on the Mall, you can’t see the full effects.
