More than three million Iraqis have been displaced within the country due to violence and fighting by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, according to the United Nations.

At least 3.09 million people have been displaced between January 2014 and June 4, 2015 within 18 Iraqi providences, according to the International Organization for Migration.

The majority of those are from Anbar province, Iraq’s Sunni center that was captured last summer by the terror group. Between April and June, more than 276,000 people were displaced amid fighting in Anbar’s provincial capital, Ramadi. The Islamic State now controls the capital, though U.S.-led coalition airstrikes are currently attempting to win back the territory for the Iraqi government.

According to IOM, more than 2 million displaced are housed in private homes, while more than 638,000 have been accommodated in shelters.

Even when military operations against the Islamic State end, the Iraqi government has warned many of the towns and villages will need extensive work to rebuild.
