Nebraska Sen. Ben Sasse declared Tuesday that if the Republican Party turns into the party of Donald Trump and David Duke, he is heading for the door immediately.
Appearing on “Morning Joe,” the Nebraska Republican kept after Trump following a Sunday Facebook post in which he said he would not support or vote for Trump if he wins the nomination. The remark came as voting kicked off on Super Tuesday, when 12 states and 595 delegates are there for the taking on the GOP side.
“Given who this guy is now, I can’t see how we think that,” Sasse said when asked if he could vote for Trump. “I don’t think this guy has any more core principles than a Kardashian marriage.”
Sasse, a freshman senator, told hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski that he and many others on the GOP side will be “out” of the party if they fall in line behind Trump.
“I hope it happens that over the next 30 or 60 days that the Republican Party again becomes the party of Abraham Lincoln, limited government, and great human potential. I want to celebrate what’s good about America in the Republican Party,” Sasse said. “But if the Republican Party becomes the party of David Duke and Donald Trump, I’m out, and I think lots and lots and lots of people are out. So ultimately, there will be more choices than these two if Trump is the nominee.”
Other than current GOP candidates Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz, Sasse declined to divulge names as to who could be a third option on the ballot in November.
