Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy has top three best-selling books of decade

The three books from the erotica series Fifty Shades of Grey were purchased more than any other books in the past decade.

The series, which was written by E.L. James, sold 35 million copies since the first book of the trilogy was published in May 2011. The first book, Fifty Shades of Grey, sold 15.2 million copies; the second book, Fifty Shades Darker, sold 10.4 million copies; and the final book, Fifty Shades Freed, sold 9.3 million copies, according to a report from the NPD Group.

Beyond being top-selling books, the Fifty Shades trilogy was also made into a set of movies starring Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan. Books that were accompanied by films made up most of the decade’s top sellers. Other books-turned-movies on the list included The Hunger Games, The Help, and The Girl on the Train.

The Fifty Shades trilogy, however, was the only set of books to have the full series land on the best-sellers of the decade list.

James made an estimated $95 million from the trilogy between book sales and a $5 million agreement to sell the movie rights for the film.
