Maryland inks a dozen recruits

The Maryland men?s lacrosse program signed 12 recruits to national letters of intent for 2008, including three players from the Baltimore area, the team announced Monday.

Boys? Latin?s Travis Reed and South River?s Shane Hall and Scott LaRue were among the group, which included three attackmen, four midfielders, three defenders, a defensive midfielder and a goalkeeper.

“We?re excited about this group of young men,” Terps coach Dave Cottle said in a statement.

“In this class, we?ve signed some very good high school lacrosse players that we hope turn into very good college lacrosse players. These young men are not only good players, but they are also good people, which is important to us, as well.”

Reed is the nation?s No. 2 high school senior attackman according to Inside Lacrosse. He scored 67 goals with 22 assists in 2006 to help lead Boys? Latin to a 21-0 record.

Reed earned a spot on the underclassmen team in June?s inaugural Under Armour All-America Lacrosse Classic at Unitas Stadium.

Hall will come to College Park after leading South River?s defense. He?s a captain and two-year starter at linebacker for the Seahawks? football team.

Hall?s teammate, LaRue, was a 2006 All-American and helped lead the Seahawks to a 13-2 regular season and a regional final berth as a midfielder.

Also included in the recruiting class were attackmen Grant Catalino (Webster, N.Y.) and Ryan Young (Manhasset, N.Y.); midfielders Warren Hansen (Glen Rock, N.J.), Bob Kercher (Durham, N.C.), Tony Mendes (Chapel Hill, N.C.), and Brett Schmidt (Maple Glen, Pa.); defenders Max Schmidt (Columbus, Ohio) and Mike White (Alexandria, Va.); and goalkeeper Mark White (Alexandria).

The Terps? 2007 recruiting class ? headlined by McDonogh midfielder Bryn Holmes and Severn goalkeeper Brian Phipps ? was ranked No. 5 in the nation by Inside Lacrosse.

The Terps went 12-5 in 2005 and lost in the NCAA semifinals to Massachusetts.
