Kim Kardashian West to freeze Instagram and Facebook accounts for one day as part of #StopHateForProfit campaign

Kim Kardashian West vowed to freeze her Instagram and Facebook accounts for one day as part of the #StopHateForProfit campaign.

Kardashian, whose account is the seventh most-followed on Instagram, made the announcement on Tuesday. Several other A-list celebrities will be doing the same.

“I love that I can connect directly with you through Instagram and Facebook,” Kardashian said. “But I can’t sit by and stay silent while these platforms continue to allow the spreading of hate, propaganda and misinformation – created by groups to sow division and split America apart – only to take steps after people are killed.”

The influencer said misinformation on social media “undermines our democracy.” She is calling her followers to suspend their activity on the platforms also.

Other celebrities who will take part in the campaign include Katy Perry, Sacha Baron Cohen, Jennifer Lawrence, model Naomi Campbell, director Judd Apatow, Ashton Kutcher, comedian Amy Schumer, Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, and Kate Hudson.

Kardashian’s sisters Khloe, Kendall, and Kylie are the 17th, 14th, and fifth most-followed accounts on Instagram, respectively.

Data from Elle estimates that Kim charges $1.2 million per sponsored Instagram post, while Kylie charges over $1.4 million. While her title may now be facing a challenge, for a long time, Kylie has been the highest-paid person on the photo-sharing app.

#StopHateForProfit began over what many have perceived as Facebook’s unwillingness to act meaningfully in response to hateful speech and misinformation. Major brands such as Coca-Cola and Adidas have pulled their ads from the platform.
