Border Patrol union head backs Robson for Arizona governor over Trump-endorsed Lake

The head of the Border Patrol agents union has thrown his support behind Arizona Republican gubernatorial candidate Karrin Taylor Robson despite personally endorsing her opponent’s border policy plan.

Brandon Judd, president of the National Border Patrol Council, who has endorsed Trump-backed GOP rival Kari Lake’s border security plan, said Robson’s experience and ability to implement it makes her the right candidate.

“There’s a huge difference between a border plan and the right person to implement a plan,” Judd told KTAR on Tuesday.

Judd’s stance created confusion in past weeks, with both candidates publicizing his support, as Robson had previously been endorsed by the NBPC. He clarified that neither candidate was wrong, as he still endorses Lake’s border policy despite backing Robson overall.

“It’s one thing to come up with a plan, but that plan is only as good as the paper it’s written on unless you can implement the plan, and we feel that — the National Border Patrol Council feels that Karrin Taylor Robson actually has the experience to implement a plan that will … make the Arizona public safe,” Judd said.

Judd touted Robson’s experience in the private sector, saying she has dealt with managing people, teams, and budgets. “That’s what a governor does,” he said.

Lake, a former local newscaster, and Robson have already been enthralled in a proxy fight of sorts between former President Donald Trump and term-bound Gov. Doug Ducey (R), who endorsed Robson.

Judd’s personal endorsement of Robson comes as early voting is already underway in the state ahead of the Aug. 2 primary.
