Bill Cassidy: Trump is following Constitution better than Obama

Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., said President Trump’s recent actions on Obamacare adhered to the U.S. Constitution in a way that former President Barack Obama’s did not.

Cassidy told Red Alert Politics that there is a “light years” difference between Trump and Obama on how they use executive actions. Cassidy’s interview came after Trump issued an order last week to expand low-quality health plans and a separate decision to cut off payments to Obamacare insurers.

Cassidy noted that a federal judge found those payments, which reimburse insurers for lowering out-of-pocket costs for low-income Obamacare customers, to be unconstitutional because Congress didn’t appropriate them.

“Trump with his executive order said I am not going to defy the Constitution, I am going to obey it, but I will toss it to Congress to do their constitutional responsibility, which is to authorize and appropriate it,” Cassidy said.

Cassidy also praised Trump’s decision to return issues such as immigration and the Iran nuclear deal back to Congress because that strengthens democracy.
