Poll: 40 percent of Americans say Obama administration was dishonest about Benghazi

Republican Congressmen aren’t the only ones questioning the Obama administration about Benghazi.

Forty percent of Americans say the Obama administration has been dishonest about the terrorist attack in Libya, according to a new Pew Research Center poll.

Only 37 percent of Americans believe this administration was honest and 23 percent say they don’t know.

As might be expected, this is a partisan issue, with 70 percent of Republicans saying the Obama administration was being dishonest about Benghazi and just 16 percent of Democrats agreeing the administration was dishonest.

But despite this partisan divide — and the best efforts of the Obama administration to blame Republicans for “politicizing” —  48 percent on independents agree that the administration has been dishonest about the attacks.

Still, 36 percent of people claim Republicans have “gone too far” with the Benghazi hearings, while 34 percent say they’ve handled the issue appropriately. The remaining 30 percent were unsure. Most Republicans — 65 percent — think Republican Congressman have handled the hearings appropriately, while most Democrats — 60 percent — say they went too far.

A whopping 51 percent of Republicans think there has been “too little” coverage on Benghazi. In contrast, 39 percent of Democrats think there has been the right amount of coverage and 22 percent actually claim there has been too much. Independents are almost evenly split on whether there has been too little coverage or the right amount.

However, the majority of people admitted they weren’t paying very much attention to the Benghazi hearings. Only 23 percent said they were following the Benghazi hearings closely with Republicans being twice as likely to be following the hearings.

The Pew Research Center surveyed 1,000 people with a margin of error of +/-  3.7 percentage points.
