‘Shameful’: NRA trashes Walmart’s decision to halt ammunition sales

The National Rifle Association called Walmart’s decision to halt their handgun ammunition sales “shameful” in a statement Tuesday afternoon.

The NRA’s scathing remarks come the same day the major retail chain announced they will discontinue sales of short-barrel rifle ammunition and will no longer sell handgun ammunition.

“The strongest defense of freedom has always been our free-market economy. It is shameful to see Walmart succumb to the pressure of the anti-gun elites. Lines at Walmart will soon be replaced by lines at other retailers who are more supportive of America’s fundamental freedoms,” the NRA’s statement began.

“The truth is Walmart’s actions today will not make us any safer,” it continued. “Rather than place the blame on the criminal, Walmart has chosen to victimize law-abiding Americans. Our leaders must be willing to approach the problems of crime, violence and mental health with sincerity and honesty.”

Walmart’s decision to stop selling those products comes approximately a month after a man opened fire at an El Paso Walmart, leaving 22 people dead. Only days before, a disgruntled employee in Mississippi shot and killed two other associates.

The company is projected to lose between 6% and 9% in market share after they stop those sales. Walmart makes up approximately 2% of the country’s firearms market, while the company sell about 20% of the country’s ammunition.
