Clinton spokesman says Cruz family was ‘legitimately wronged’

Hillary Clinton’s spokesman defended Sen. Ted Cruz’s daughters on Thursday, saying the Washington Post shouldn’t have poked fun at them in a political cartoon it later removed.

“Ted Cruz’s family was legitimately wronged here,” tweeted Brian Fallon, who serves as press secretary for the Clinton campaign. “Kids should be off limits. WaPo was right to take down the cartoon.”

The Post published a cartoon on its site on Tuesday depicting Cruz’s two young daughters as monkeys dancing while their father turned a crank. Several hours later, the newspaper removed the drawing and posted an apology from editorial director Fred Hiatt, who said children should be left out of political cartoons.

Cruz has responded by hammering the paper and trying to fundraise off the incident. On Wednesday he said that “not too much ticks me off, but making fun of my girls, that’ll do it.”

“Don’t mess with our kids. Don’t mess with my kids. Don’t mess with Marco’s kids. Don’t mess with Hillary’s kid. Don’t mess with anybody’s kids. Leave kids alone,” he said. “And if the media wants to attack and ridicule every Republican, well that’s what they’re gonna do. But leave our kids alone.”

Cruz is currently among the top tier of Republican candidates competing for the presidential nomination. In the general election the winner is most likely to face Clinton, who is the Democratic front-runner.
