President Trump will keynote a prominent anti-abortion gala next week, the Susan B. Anthony List annual “Campaign for Life,” according to the White House.
The event is scheduled for May 22 at the National Building Museum in Washington. Last year, Vice President Mike Pence and senior counselor Kellyanne Conway both spoke at the event.
Raj Shah, White House principal deputy press secretary, said Trump would “discuss the many actions he has taken to protect the lives of the unborn and defend religious liberty.”
Conway is set to receive a distinguished leader award at the gala, and House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., is also scheduled to give remarks.
Trump’s stated views on abortion have changed over the years. He once described himself as “very pro-choice,” and during primary season he said that Planned Parenthood, which SBA List and other anti-abortion groups oppose, did “very good work for millions of women.” As president, he has signed off on administrative moves that will restrict access to abortion, going further than his Republican predecessors, and has appointed conservative judges.
“President Donald Trump is governing as the most pro-life president in our nation’s history,” SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser said. “President Trump has diligently and successfully gone about fulfilling his promises to the pro-life voters who worked so hard to elect him, and it has been a privilege to stand with him to defend the innocent unborn.”
Dannenfelser, who was chairwoman of Trump’s Pro-Life coalition, said the midterm elections were the “most important election for the pro-life movement since Roe v. Wade,” the 1973 Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion in the U.S. The organization will reach more than 2 million voters in time for the election to urge them to vote for congressional candidates who oppose abortion.
“Unborn children, their mothers, and pro-life taxpayers could not have a stronger ally in the White House than President Trump, and we look forward to the many victories we can achieve together,” Dannenfelser said.
