The region’s job growth stalled in June with 2,700 fewer jobs compared with a year prior, according to new data from the George Mason University’s Center for Regional Analysis. The loss is in part attributed to the loss of the temporary Census jobs last spring. However there were also 5,000 fewer federal government jobs in June compared with June 2010.

Other major sectors to take a hit were construction and manufacturing, which combined for 8,000 fewer jobs than a year ago. However, the addition of 13,000 business and professional services jobs mitigated much of the losses.

Northern Virginia posted a net increase of 5,800 jobs with gains largely in professional services, retail and leisure. Suburban Maryland suffered the biggest loss with 8,900 fewer jobs in June than a year prior, including 6,000 fewer construction jobs. The District had 1,800 fewer jobs than the prior June with small losses spread across the federal government, leisure and retail industries.
