George H.W. Bush reunites with Barbara and daughter Robin in heavenly political cartoon

A political cartoon of the former President George H.W. Bush meeting his late wife and young daughter in heaven has gone viral.

After the 41st president died at the age of 94 late Friday, the Clarion Ledger in Mississippi published the art from their cartoonist Marshall Ramsey.

The cartoon shows Bush with wife Barbara Bush, who died in April, holding hands with Robin, their daughter who died of leukemia when she was 3. In the foreground is a World War II era plane up in the clouds — indicating that Bush, who was a wartime pilot, had flown up to heaven. “We waited for you,” Barbara Bush says.

The cartoon was shared by Bush spokesman Jim McGrath and many others.

Ramsey was also behind the cartoon of Barbara Bush, after she died at age 92, greeting Robin at the gates of heaven. That cartoon was shared by Bush family members and also went viral.

“I received a very kind note from President George H.W. Bush’s Chief of Staff for the Barbara Bush cartoon. President Bush was unable to write due to his Parkinson’s, but it was his sentiments. And it was very humble and gracious,” Ramsey wrote in a series of tweets Saturday. “One moment from Barbara Bush’s passing that struck me was that he greeted every mourner who came to her casket. He sat his wheelchair and showed remarkable strength. It was a powerful and frail moment.”

“I’ve flown in a TBM Avenger, the plane he flew in World War 2. I can’t imagine being that young and having that much responsibility as he flew through fields of flak. And then barely surviving after being shot out of the sky,” Ramsey added. “Not every cartoon I drew about President Bush was flattering. But the last one is. My prayers are with his friends and family tonight. And the nation. He lived a fascinating life of service.”
