The Vikings conquered Johns Hopkins University?s Homewood Field on Monday afternoon.
The Mt. Hebron High School girls lacrosse team downed St. Mary?s High School, 14-8, at the annual Maryland High School Lacrosse Showdown.
Mt. Hebron took a 6-0 lead in the first half, and that would be the difference in the game.
“I was surprised that it was 6-0,” said Brooke Kuhl-McClelland, the Mt. Hebron head coach. Mt. Hebron?s Megan Bosica had four goals, and Jackie Giles and Katie Rekart had three each. Alicia Krause had two goals, and Jessica Giles and Jill Rekart added one each.
St. Mary?s (10-2) caught a tough break in the first half when senior attacker Allison Perkins left the game with a leg injury. “It was tough losing her. It took us 15 minutes to come back from that,” said Sue Chittim, the St. Mary?s head coach.
Chittim said that Perkins usually sets up her teammates, and with her off the field the offense could not adjust.
“I told them that I was afraid to put them (the team) back on the field in the second half because I did not know what they would do, and they responded to that challenge,” Chittim said, referring to her halftime lecture.
St. Mary?s senior midfielder Christian Carr scored the first goal of the second half. She finished the game with two goals and an assist. Samantha Schrum led the scoring for St. Mary?s with three goals, while Caroline Cochran scored twice and Erin O?Donovan added one goal.
Unfortunately for St. Mary?s, Mt. Hebron was able to keep pace andmatched every second-half goal. “They can make a comeback at any time,” Kuhl-McClelland said of St. Mary?s.
Bosica, a senior midfielder bound for the University of North Carolina, helped keep Mt. Hebron in charge. All four of Bosica?s goals came in the second half.
“We wanted to come out big early and we accomplished that,” Bosica said. “We were looking forward to this game for a long time; it felt like it went by too quickly.”
