Steve Bannon: ‘Hillary Clinton’s not very bright’ for ignoring populism in American politics

Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon called Hillary Clinton “not very bright” during the taping of his first television interview since leaving the Trump administration.

“Hillary Clinton’s not very bright,” Bannon told Charlie Rose during an interview for CBS’ “60 Minutes,” though his comments were not aired Sunday as part of the program.

Pundits thought Clinton was “so much smarter than Donald Trump” but she didn’t “really have a grasp” on the importance of populism in American politics to her electoral detriment, Bannon said.

“She doesn’t have a grasp on what’s important and what’s not, and that’s essential in a leader,” he added.

Bannon served as chief executive officer of Trump’s campaign in the final months of the campaign.

During the wide-ranging interview that touched on issues from foreign policy to the domestic politics of the Russia investigation, Bannon reflected on his role shaping the first turbulent months of the Trump presidency until his departure in August.

Like the Trump campaign, Democrats will also have to embrace an economic nationalism agenda that puts Americans first moving forward, Bannon continued.

“The only question before us: Is it going to be a left-wing populism or a right-wing populism?” Bannon said. “And that is the question that will be answered in 2020.”
