Marjorie Taylor Greene: Pete Buttigieg should ‘stay out of girls’ bathrooms’

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene took aim at Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and his husband, Chasten, Saturday, saying the couple should “stay out of our girls’ bathrooms.”

Greene, a Republican from Georgia, made the comments while speaking at a rally headlined by former President Donald Trump in Commerce, Georgia. The controversial lawmaker was discussing the record rates of inflation and high gas prices when she turned her attention to Buttigieg, who is gay.

“You know what? Pete Buttigieg can take his electric vehicles and his bicycles, and he and his husband can stay out of our girls’ bathrooms,” she said to cheers from the crowd.

Buttigieg has been an aggressive proponent of electric vehicles in his capacity as a member of President Joe Biden’s Cabinet. He has faced criticism, though, for comments he has made suggesting that people should purchase new electric automobiles in order to avoid skyrocketing gas prices. Those remarks have largely been denounced as tone-deaf at a time of considerable financial hardship for many. The transportation secretary has also become known for his penchant for riding a bicycle around Washington, D.C.

Buttigieg came out as gay in 2015, just before being elected as mayor of South Bend, Indiana. He married his partner, Chasten Glezman Buttigieg, in 2018. Chasten was an active participant in his husband’s 2020 bid for the Democratic presidential nomination, with Buttigieg making history as the first openly gay person to seek the White House.

Representatives for the transportation secretary and his husband could not be reached for comment on Greene’s dig, which appeared to tie Buttigieg’s homosexuality to transgender people who seek to use the bathroom that matches their self-assigned gender identity.

Greene also took aim at Lia Thomas, the transgender swimmer from the University of Pennsylvania who won the women’s 500-yard freestyle NCAA championship earlier this month, prompting criticism from some who argued that Thomas had an unfair advantage as someone who was born and raised as a biological male.

“And old Lia Thomas, Lia’s going to have to remember his name is William, and he needs to go back to men’s swimming because we’re going to kick the biological men out of the women’s sports,” the GOP lawmaker said, prompting more cheers from the crowd.
