Scalia funeral Mass set for Saturday at Basilica

The Supreme Court announced late Tuesday the funeral Mass for Justice Antonin Scalia will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington.

Scalia, 79, died Saturday morning while on a hunting trip in Texas. The devout Catholic justice was appointed to the highest court in 1986 by President Ronald Reagan, who deemed Scalia the “intellectual anchor for the originalist and and textualist position in the court’s conservative wing.”

Details about Scalia’s memorial and funeral plans were made public Tuesday. Following tradition, Scalia’s body will lie in repose in the Supreme Court’s Great Hall on Friday for private and public ceremonies. A family spokesman declined to share where the justice’s remains will be buried, though many justices have been buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

Scalia is survived by his wife, Maureen, and their nine children.
