Second quarter review

…Defensive tackle Cornelius Griffin is dominating along the line. He’s getting, and beating, one-on-one blocking to make plays.

…Randy Thomas injured his right triceps; he hurt his left one two years ago, and is out for the game. Noticed that Will Montgomery had replaced him earlier in the quarter. This could be a devastating injury for the line. The Redskins now are in trouble anyway, if something happens to Casey Rabach or Derrick Dockery, the Redskins have no replacement. This is why you can’t have just two backup OL active and also have five receivers.

…The Redskins went to a no-huddle attack on their opening drive of the quarter, with some shotgun. It worked OK. It’s a good change of pace, but that’s about it. Jim Zorn does not like it as a primary option. The Redskins used the no-huddle twice; the first play went for a five-yard pass to Clinton Portis. On the next play, a screen was blown up and he had to throw it away. They returned to huddlling thereafter.

…Field goals will not win games. I don’t care who you play. But Mike Sellers ruined that drive by dropping a pass right in his mitts.

…Chris Horton missed the tackle on Steven Jackson’s long run. Missed tackles by the secondary has been a problem since camp opened. And LaRon Landry, again, took another bad angle on the play. That happens way too often.

… Before the Redskins took their second timeout there was clear confusion on the field and on the sidelines. The coaches seemed to be yelling at Phillip Daniels to get on the field. Jerry Gray was more demonstrative. Not sure if he was yelling at Daniels, but Daniels was the calm one. After the time out, Daniels was on the field. Will find out more about that later.

…DeAngelo Hall slipped on the fade pass for a touchdown. Just slipped. Man, third down is killing this team.

…Derrick Dockery has two false starts today. How that happens … at home… next to the center … is beyond me.

…Jason Campbell did a good job keeping his eyes upfield on his pass to tight end Chris Cooley, after first scrambling to his right. It resulted in a 17-yard play. But, honestly, I’m almost done analyzing all of Campbell’s plays. Score points. Then we’ll know how you’ve progressed. Of course, get some help from your receivers, too.

…Campbell is doing a good job being patient in the gun and has time; he’s working the underneath stuff and crossing routes.

…Marko Mitchell got one snap in the second quarter. Did nothing. Glad he’s active.

…Rock Cartwright did not return the last kickoff; Devin Thomas did. Hmmm.

…Man, is this looking like last year’s game or what? The Redskins are lucky the offiicals blew the call on the field regarding Santana Moss’ fumble; otherwise it’s seven more points for the Rams.

…The Redskins were booed off the field. Not loudly, but definitely heard. The fans have a right to be angry. But the reality is the Redskins are just an average team.
