Giant stores to sell Metro’s SmarTrip cards

Metro riders who want SmarTrip cards can now purchase them at Giant food stores.

The $5 cards have been made available at 15 Giant food stores in Maryland, six Giant stores in Virginia, and five Giant stores in D.C. The stores are selling the cards, like postal stamps, as a public service, Metro spokesperson Lisa Farbstein said. SmarTrip cards can also be purchased on the Metro Web site, at Metro Center and Pentagon stations’ sales offices, at Metro headquarters in D.C., and in Metro parking facility vending machines.

“By making SmarTrip cards more widely available through our partners at Giant, we hope to get the cards into the hands of more and more customers in the neighborhoods we serve,” said Metro General Manager John Catoe.

The cards are required for payment at most Metro-operated parking facilities. Metro is considering eliminating paper transfer slips so that a SmarTrip card would be required.
