Following debate, Clinton holds lead in key battleground states

In the wake of the first presidential debate last week, Hillary Clinton retained leads over Donald Trump in key swing states Pennsylvania and North Carolina and now leads in Florida.

According to a new Quinnipiac poll released Monday, Clinton tops Trump in all three states by at least 3 points. After nearly a month since their last polls, Clinton’s lead remained largely static in Pennsylvania and North Carolina.

She leads in Pennsylvania by a 4-point margin (45-41 percent) and North Carolina by 3 points (46-43). In Florida, Clinton broke through, taking a 5-point lead (46-41) after being tied with Trump in the previous survey.

The only state where she trails is Ohio, which Trump leads with 47 percent to Clinton’s 42 percent. He also led the state by 4 points in the previous poll. In each state, Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson wins at least 5 percent support, with 7 percent in North Carolina being his high-water mark.

In all four states, Clinton was viewed as the overwhelming winner of last Monday’s debate. However, that seems to have not made a dent anywhere other than Florida, where she overtook Trump.

“Although Hillary Clinton clearly won the first debate with Donald Trump, this victory did her only little good in her race for the White House,” said Peter Brown, assistant director of the poll.

In each of the four states, between 497-545 likely voters were surveyed and have a margin of error of either +/-4.2 percent or +/-4.4 percent.

According to the latest RealClearPolitics averages, Clinton continues to hold leads in Pennsylvania and Florida by 1.8 and 2 percentage points, respectively. Meanwhile, Trump tops the former secretary in Ohio and North Carolina by 2 and 0.8-point margins.
