Voters anxious over pocketbook issues are also growing jittery about violent crime, and the FBI confirmed some of their greatest fears today by showing a jump in murders and car thefts.
While overall violent crime held steady between 2000-2001, the FBI said murders increased from 22,000 in 2020 to 22,900 in 2021, and “motor-vehicle-theft incidents” jumped from 406,953 to 555,543.

The robbery rate decreased by 8.9% from 2020 to 2021, and the FBI said that it “heavily contributed to the decrease in overall violent crime despite increases in murder and rape rates at the national level.”
The level of crime has added to the issues voters are growing concerned about as the election nears in just a month. Economic issues have been the top concern, but a survey released today said that most voters also plan to express their concern about crime when they enter the polls.
The latest Rasmussen Reports survey said that over 8 in 10 believe crime is a top issue and that 62% believe crime is getting worse.
Half rated President Joe Biden’s efforts to fight violent crime as “poor,” and a total of 62% rate his war on crime as fair to poor, a disappointing number for a president who once portrayed himself as a friend of police and tough on crime.
The poll was released on the heels of the Treasury Department’s creation of a new racial equity committee. The vice chair of that group has promoted defunding police and putting racial justice at the center of government policymaking.

Voters apparently have a different view, according to Rasmussen.
That’s because 83% of likely voters said the issue of crime would be important in their choices, and that includes 81% of Democrats.
