The last two Republican presidents say they have no plan to endorse Donald Trump, the GOP presidential nominee in waiting, at the party’s convention in July.
A spokesman for President George H.W. Bush told the Texas Tribute that Bush has “retired from politics.”
“He came out of retirement to do a few things for Jeb, but those were the exceptions that proved the rule,” spokesman Jim McGrath said.
A personal aide to George W. Bush, Freddy Ford, said the younger Bush “does not plan to participate in or comment on the presidential campaign.”
The decision by the only two living GOP presidents could become an obstacle to Trump as he looks to unify the party. Trump eliminated his last two Republican opponents this week, and is now looking for his former opponents to support him in his fight against Hillary Clinton.
At the same time, however, Trump has said he’s not interested in support from Republicans who were “nasty” to him during the primary.
