Soccer stadium study is on PG council agenda

Maryland Stadium Authority officials will brief the Prince George’s County Council today on the results of a study weighing the economic benefits of a soccer stadium in Prince George’s County.

The report, commissioned in January, could give an indication of whether D.C. United is a step closer to leaving the District of Columbia — and a proposed but stalled stadium plan at Poplar Point — for the Maryland suburbs.

The MDA study is not site-specific, but locations near the Greenbelt and New Carrollton metro stations have both been reported as possibilities for a stadium.

The Greenbelt City Council is opposed to the idea, and nowhere in the city’s development agreement, master plan or concepts for the Greenbelt Station area, has a soccer stadium been considered appropriate or desirable.

Prince George’s council member Eric Olson (D-District 3), who represents New Carrollton, said only that he was interested in finding out the report’s recommendations.
