Dawson’s Creek star James Van Der Beek said he is grateful for his move from Los Angeles, California, to Texas, calling it “really centering” and “grounding.”
“I know for me it’s been really centering, and I feel like for the kids it’s been grounding and a different kind of education that we never could have offered them in a classroom,” Van Der Beek, 45, told People regarding setting up a home in Texas with his wife, Kimberly, and their six children.

Van Der Beek, who also starred in Varsity Blues, said he and his family have enjoyed experiencing nature in a new way.
“Just the things that we’re all aware of, like what phase the moon is in because we come out, we look at it,” Van Der Beek said. “I feel like we have a relationship with these natural cycles that are happening.”
“Rain in L.A., it was like, ‘Ah, man. I’m gonna be 20 minutes late because it’s raining.’ Here, it’s a godsend,” the actor continued adding that his children “jump around. They sing, ‘Rain, rain come today,’ and they run out in it because we need it. It’s just connected us, not just to nature, but to the natural life cycles all around us.”
Van Der Beek also said food delivery has no longer been an option with the move.
“So we started cooking a lot more, and the kids are really getting into it,” he said. “When you recognize that ingredients are not just something you dump the whole thing into — you actually have to measure and there’s a reason for that — it’s great.”
The actor continued: “We look at food as sustenance in our house — it’s medicine to get through, the building blocks of recovery. But it’s also there’s such a social component to it. When you’re making a recipe, you’re sharing recipes, you’re laughing, you’re in the kitchen, you’re coming together, and it’s kind of nutrients for the soul when you get together and cook.”

The Dawson’s Creek star recently celebrated the first birthday of his sixth child and second son, Jeremiah. Van Der Beek joked that everything truly is bigger in Texas.
“He’s by far the biggest baby we’ve ever made by a long shot,” Van Der Beek said with a laugh. “He’s really been a blessing.”
