Former President Bill Clinton was cheered Monday as he and other electors met in New York to cast their vote for president.
“It’s my honor to welcome him here today,” New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said to other electors as they rose and clapped.
Clinton is one of several New York electors met in the state capitol to cast their votes for his wife, Hillary Clinton, who easily defeated President-elect Trump in the state. But Trump was expected to win handily, as he won 306 Electoral College votes to Hillary Clinton’s 232 votes.
Some Republican electors have said they would not support Trump, but Trump was nonetheless widely expected to get the 270 votes needed to become the next president.
